2009-2010: City of Prince George, British Columbia
The Spirit of the North Festival of Trees is a 1 week display of decorated trees, gingerbread houses and wreaths. For a nominal cost the general public can enter the exhibit hall and view the many displays. The public can also bid on items and enter their name for various draws that occur over the week. All proceeds go to a Foundation for the Prince George Regional Hospital.
2008-2009: City of Brampton, Ontario
Participation in the Communities in Bloom and WinterLights programs have
been a wonderful catalyst to revitalize Brampton’s flower town heritage, and to reenergize festive celebrations throughout the community. From Diwali, to the Winter Wonderland celebrations, through a variety of arts and culture events, to the Mayor’s New Years’ Day Levee there are a wealth of events to engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
2007-2008: Town of Labrador City, Newfoundland & Labrador
This remote community of 8,000 residents is located at 53 degrees north latitude and with temperatures in the range of minus 24 degrees Celsius. It enjoys an extraordinary scope of programming for festive celebrations. There is a range of indoor and outdoor quality celebrations for all ages and interests such as the Disney Pancake Breakfast with Santa, International Day of Disabled Persons activities, the Roger Lyon Memorial ''Toys for Joys’' concert, the White Wolf Snowmobile New Year’s Eve Party and the Family Skating Party.
Residents show a passion for the environment when, on December 15th, Labrador City citizens join enthusiasts from across Canada, the United States and Europe in Audubon’s longest running wintertime tradition, the annual Christmas Bird Count.
2006-2007: Town of Ponoka, Alberta
For residents and visitors alike, the wide-ranging Festive Season Celebrations in Ponoka will be ones to remember. Nearly 1000 attendees, some costumed, cheered as the beautifully-decorated CPR Holiday Train “rolled” in and presented a concert, a visit by Santa and treats! Some other examples of celebrations are:
- The Santa Claus Parade and reception at the Cadet Hall
- Kinsmen Carol Festival with 14 performing groups
- Festive meals. e.g. Rising Sun Clubhouse Luncheon
- Church services, school concerts, Youth Centre Festivities and Alberta Hospital Occasions
- Cookie party at the Museum
- Senior Centre Dinner and Tour of the Lights
Ponoka’s Festive Season Celebrations are exemplary and its people are proud to render ‘Sing of Our Ponoka’ song in any season!
