2007-2008: Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) targets a broad spectrum of goodwill needs. Not only does it concentrate on food/toys and the traditional Christmas hamper distributed by food banks such as the Salvation Army but also attempts to provide for the needs of the homeless, battered women, those with addictions and youth with various problems.

Two impressive examples of goodwill initiatives are the work of the Junior League of Halifax and city support of HRM councillors. The Junior League of Halifax is a group of women dedicated to building better communities. One of their fund-raising events is their ''Homes for the Holidays'', a tour of festively decorated homes.

Each of the twenty-three HRM councilors is allotted $3000.00 to distribute to volunteer groups within his/her district (maximum $500.00 per group) to assist them with community projects.

2006-2007:  Town of Labrador City, Newfoundland & Labrador

Labrador City gives from the heart and doesn't hesitate when help is needed. In today’s commercial world, their overwhelming response to goodwill shows the true meaning of Christmas:

  • The municipality generously assists a Youth Centre (heat, snow clearing, etc.), grants for programs i.e. hockey, etc. and holds a volunteer appreciation.

  • I.O.C., Carol Auto plus other businesses collect toys and food (Stuff the Bus), and hold hospital fundraising telethon and Seniors & Children’s Christmas parties.

  • Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Legion are active organizations volunteering and assisting financially for numerous events i.e. Santa parade, telethon and helping those less fortunate (Toys for Joys).

  • Most residents, of all ages, are involved in more than one service group or assisting with fundraising events. High school students collected over 1,000 lbs food for the Food bank, candy canes sales with proceeds to needy and Christmas stockings for needy teens.

These are only a tip of the iceberg of goodwill in Labrador City.
